Where we might have been making little sparks
We’re just banging rocks together and don’t remember how to start
Though we may have seen firelight creeping in
We no longer laugh about it
You just smirk and I just grin
Though the devil owes a favour
To let a little firelight in

Under flows the river
Under runs the Fleet
Beneath our feet a holy well is buried under this street

I’ll just have to go and throw good money
Just to forget the half of what I now know
Because I’m no urban fox
And I can’t live on only rocks
But I can shriek like demons
And tower over tower blocks
I’d be howling at the daftest things

It cares not a splash in the lake
For all of our shadow and doubt

I've been facing the same way and breathing for 10,000 days
To hear you whistle past once more
And wash up on my shore
Rise up in finery fire-feathered
To come back down coal-dull
Sewn into your winter clothes

And pulling at the little tears in need of stitching and repairs
Too unspun and overwound to get the overtone to sound
I cannot make word today, but breathing spells and formulae
