Rocks 03:53
Where we might have been making little sparks We’re just banging rocks together and don’t remember how to start Though we may have seen firelight creeping in We no longer laugh about it You just smirk and I just grin Though the devil owes a favour To let a little firelight in I’ve still got his number But I won’t want to be calling it in Under flows the river Under runs the Fleet Beneath our feet a holy well is buried under this street And with words so simple I’ll just have to go and throw good money Just to forget the half of what I now know Because I’m no urban fox And I can’t live on only rocks But I can shriek like demons And tower over tower blocks I’d be howling at the daftest things
2.
That was the kittiwake cry Like I’ve never heard it before Like I’ve only heard it in writing It cares not a splash in the lake For all of our shadow and doubt For all of our uproar and slighting Says I must be good I must be brave That was a drop in the wind That was me dropped like a stone Dropped like a fulmar in fluster I must be good I must be brave We have been walking and squawking for hours We’ve cut down the trees and we’ve trampled the flowers We’ve dug up the old king and scattered his bones We’ve woken his ghost in our turning of stones Follow me follow me home We can be back before dark Follow me follow me home I must be good I must be great Black and white or not at all Better far to take a fall Feathers ruffled but alive Better far to take a dive We have been walking and squawking for miles We’ve tilled the dry earth and we’ve kicked down the stiles Among all the old kings, asleep in their graves When we could be wintering over the waves
3.
I'm just a sunup running late Acting out, unsober What's there witching us away? Who's not been seen since october? I've been facing the same way and breathing for 10,000 days To hear you whistle past once more And wash up on my shore Rise up in finery fire-feathered To come back down coal-dull Sewn into your winter clothes And crying like a gull And pulling at the little tears in need of stitching and repairs Too unspun and overwound to get the overtone to sound I cannot make word today, but breathing spells and formulae Sparrowfeather neutron star, I can't say how good you are

about

sparrowfeather is the new EP from Upcycled Sounds artists jay sunaway. Available soon on all digital platforms, and as beautiful postcards by collage artist Rebecca Loweth.

Where 2018’s Earth Hum EP was centred on technology and modern life, sparrowfeather is about place, history, and memory. ‘Kittiwake Cry’ is inspired by coastal walks over burial grounds in East Anglia and the Isle of Rúm, whereas lead single ‘Rocks’ is a tour of the rivers, wells, and railways buried underneath the collective’s homeground in London.

’10,000 Days’, featuring fiddle playing from new addition Lauren Spiceley, is a return to the group’s space-folk roots. It’s an incantation conjuring neutron stars, the music of the spheres, firebirds, and tangles of thread and guitar-strings.

Each of these songs is represented in one of three postcards commissioned from collage artist Rebecca Loweth: "I believe that the postcard encapsulates the idea of ‘nostalgia’ and highlights the perceived pressure to preserve and share our memories. In the perpetually oscillated postcard, the public and private become shared imaginaries. Parallels are drawn with Instagram, perhaps the modern day postcard, the rectangle postcard has morphed into the square on-screen format. My collages show a disjointed reality, drawing attention to the meticulously planned and manipulated shared image."
